Kim Kardashian’s company is being sued for $100 million for endorsing an illuminated cell phone case.
The reality TV star has made little secret of her love of the LuMee phone case, regularly posting selfies she has taken using the device on her social media pages over the past few years.
However, Kim’s business Kimsaprincess Inc. has now found themselves at the center of a patent infringement lawsuit, amid Snap Light’s claims that they first created the selfie case.
The complaint, obtained by TMZ.com, sees Snap Light state a man called Hooshmand Harooni filed a patent for an “integrated lighting accessory and case for a mobile phone device” back in 2013. He is then said to have licensed the phone case to Snap Light.
Snap Light have accused LuMee of copying their SnapLight product while claiming that Kim’s endorsement of LuMee means they can’t compete in the illuminated cell phone case market. In their complaint, Snap Light have asked the court to stop Kim from promoting the LuMee cases, and are asking for $100 million in damages in a bid to make up for “lost profits”.
But Kim’s representative hit back at the lawsuit in a statement released to TMZ, which read: “The patent lawsuit filed by Snap Light has no merit and is just another attempted shakedown. Kim has done absolutely nothing wrong.”
As well as using the LuMee case for her own personal use, Kim also used it to help take some selfies with Hillary Clinton during the pres
idential election campaign.
Hillary then later went on to The Ellen DeGeneres Show and spoke about the selfies, while mentioning the LuMee case.
Telling Ellen about the phone, Hillary said: “She takes out her phone and she presses a button. I’ve never seen this anywhere else. I mean, you know, you’re a famous celebrity, maybe you have. I haven’t. (The phone) has light all the way around it, like little tiny, tiny light bulbs.
“It makes anybody look better! I have been desperately looking for one of those ever since.”
And of the effect Kim’s involvement has had on sales, LuMee founder Allan Shoemake told Fashionista.com that having a world-famous star on board has boosted business immeasurably.
“January 2016 was the first time Kim promoted it, and we doubled the sales from 2015 in one month. She certainly moves the needle. It was great because she used LuMee organically before she partnered with us,” he said.
